Following our memorable journey to reconnect with the roots of Chinese craftsmanship, I’m excited to share the next chapter of our adventure. We visited the inspiring couple, ShìYuè and Wáng XīnHuá, whose artistic creations have become cherished items at Rouge.
Our friends ShìYuè and Wáng XīnHuá welcomed us again into their workshop with open arms, sharing not only their creative space but also their warmth and hospitality. We enjoyed meals together, exchanging stories and laughter, and experiencing firsthand the creative spirit that thrives in their studio.
Wáng XīnHuá, a talented ceramic artist, originally studied at the renowned Jingdezhen Ceramics University, majoring in ceramics. His education laid a solid foundation for his craft, which he has since developed into a successful studio.
What sets Wáng XīnHuá apart is his approach to design, which is both playful and innovative. He uses small, everyday objects to create random textures, saying, “I use some small objects in daily life to create random textures to give myself some small surprises.” This philosophy is beautifully reflected in his small works of art, such as the textured teaware and incense burners, which many of you have come to love. He employs the ancient practice of applying ‘engobes’ to achieve specific decorative effects, adding depth and character to each piece.
ShìYuè, on the other hand, brings a delightful touch of humour and whimsy to her creations. Her work often features animals and characters in bright, vivid colours, making them a popular talking point among our customers. The fun character hangers she creates never fail to bring a smile to our faces and add a unique charm to any space.
What resonates deeply with me about ShìYuè and Wáng XīngHuá is their unwavering commitment to creating from the heart. In a world increasingly driven by money and success, this couple remains true to their artistic vision, focusing on simplicity and beauty. Their creations stand out against the mass-produced noise around them, serving as a testament to their dedication to their craft. This purity of intent is incredibly inspiring and connects with me on a profound level.
During our visit, my family and I had the wonderful opportunity to try our hand at ceramics under their expert guidance. This hands-on experience was incredibly enriching for us all. Working with their clay in their studio, we gained a deeper appreciation for the meticulous effort and creativity that go into each piece they produce.
Being with ShìYuè and Wáng XīnHuá, and experiencing the artistry and passion they pour into their work, has made us value their ceramics even more. It’s not just about the beautiful objects they create, but also about the stories, the laughter, and the heartfelt connections that come with them. This connection to the makers has allowed me to surround myself with like-minded, warm-hearted people, which is the biggest motivation for me to share their creations with the world.
I’m grateful to be able to share these experiences with you and to bring a piece of this journey back to our shop. Thank you for being a part of our story.

2024 has been an incredible year for Rouge, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Together, we navigated a tough year of reduced foot traffic and shoppers on Stoke Newington High Street. But thanks to you—our cherished customers, friends, and families—we’re heading into our 20th year in business stronger than ever! Read our year in review here.
