Embracing Tradition: Celebrating Chinese New Year at Rouge

As the vibrant hues of red and gold adorn our Stoke Newington shop, we are filled with excitement for the joyous festivities of Chinese New Year. This annual celebration, also known as Lunar New Year, is a time-honoured tradition steeped in rich symbolism and cultural significance.

Lunar New Year, celebrated by millions around the world, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. It's a time for family reunions, feasting, and ushering in good fortune for the year ahead.

One of the most iconic elements of Chinese New Year is the colour red. Symbolising luck, prosperity, and happiness, red is prominently featured in decorations, clothing, and festivities. It's believed that adorning windows and doors with auspicious words written on red paper wards off evil spirits and invites good luck into the home.

Traditional decorations, known as "Jianzhi 剪纸" adorn on doors and windows at homes during Chinese New Year. These intricate paper cutouts often feature auspicious phrases and symbols, such as "福" (fu), meaning good luck and blessing, and "财" (cai), representing wealth,  zodiac animals and scenes associated with prosperity. The art of paper cutting has a long history in China, dating back to ancient times, and is regarded as a form of folk art that brings blessings and joy to those who display them.

Each year is also associated with a zodiac animal, representing different personality traits and characteristics. 2024 marks the Year of the Wood Dragon, symbolising strength, vitality, and growth. Dragons are revered creatures in Chinese culture, embodying power, wisdom, and auspicious energy.

At Rouge Shop, we had the pleasure of celebrating Chinese New Year with our beloved Stoke Newington community. Together, we embraced the spirit of the season with drinks, Chinese snacks, and engaging workshops where friends of the shop learned the art of making cutout decorations and new year auspicious calligraphy. It has been a heartwarming celebration filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the joy of cultural exchange.

As we reflect on the traditions and customs that unite us during this festive season, we're reminded of the importance of community and connection. Our Stoke Newington community is more than just customers – you're our extended family, and we're grateful for each and every one of you.

As we welcome the Year of the Wood Dragon, may it bring you prosperity, joy, and countless blessings. From all of us at Rouge Shop, Happy Chinese New Year!
