This sideboard comes from Shandong Province in Northern China and dates from about 1900. The doors have faded images of peonies, traditionally symbolising female beauty, as well as richness, honour and high social class. There is a decorative fret work apron running between the three front legs, making this piece stand out. It has recently been reconditioned in an artisan workshop in Beijing and has been fitted with a removable inner shelf. We think the simple design of this cabinet would add a lovely bohemian touch to a modern home.
