Rouge is delighted to host a Paper Cutting Workshop this Chinese New Year on February 1, 2025. This year, we celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Snake on January 29. The Snake symbolizes wisdom, intuition, transformation, and strategic thinking, making it a fascinating year to embrace. Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is one of the most significant celebrations in China, steeped in cultural and historical importance. It marks the start of spring and offers a time for renewal, reflection, and festivities. Chinese New Year signals the beginning of spring, the start of a new year in the Chinese lunar calendar and a time to gain new luck.

Join us to learn the traditional paper cutting technique that dates back to the 2nd century and create beautiful paper motifs for the Chinese New Year of the Snake. Led by Sevim Metin who has created some beautiful patterns specially for these workshops. Traditionally papercuts used as window and door decorations in China and made out of red paper to symbolise happiness and festivities.

The workshop welcomes parents with children - we ask for a maximum of two children per adult. All materials will be provided, Booking is essential.

Sevim Metin is an Early Years teacher at St Paul’s Steiner School in Islington. She is also a founder of Three Seed Garden, which aims to teach adults and children natural and seasonal handwork.

“In my work I enjoy celebrating the peaceful togetherness of the many cultural heritages in London through festivals and crafts. Snowflake paper cut has been a long lasting passion for me and together with my interest in Chinese Medicine has led me to be inspired by this rich old folk tradition of Chinese Paper-Cut, which was noted by UNESCO as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.
