Pattern Design: Sex by Alex McKenzie 'Coffee, Tea or Me?'

BLUEHANDED is collaborating with artist Alex McKenzie, to create contemporary patterns using the ancient techniques of hand dyed natural indigo.

East meets West, actually Stoke Newington East London meets ancient China.  The collaboration creates patterns that could be used for interior decoration such as bedding, curtains, cushions and wall covering.

Sex is a collection of individual prints following in the tradition of textiles as a medium to tell stories about human relationships, life’s fortunes and rituals through symbolism. ‘

Coffee, Tea or Me? is said to be an old pick-up line used by flight attendants serving refreshments to onboard passengers. Used in this context, the question of which refreshment is most appealing is spelled out visually through the playful ménage à trois of botanical references – the leaves of the rubber plant combined with coffee beans and the tea plant. Reading between the lines of these visual cues, the print provides the backdrop or setting for a liaison, be that in the bedroom or at the dining table…the choice is yours.

Whilst at first the prints appear to be part of a familiar visual narrative and established textile tradition, the underlying symbolism cleverly weaves a different story. These collections reflect the central themes running throughout Alex’s work through her depiction of nature as a wider statement about our lives as human beings, our interactions with each other and the world we live in.

Our indigo is natural, from fermented indigo plant leaves and of the highest quality. It does not fade or rub off like other inferior indigos. Like denim, before using with light colours it is recommended to have the fabric pre-washed.

General care: Gentle detergent, cold or lukewarm wash & shady line dry. Do not tumble dry. Wash & use with other dark colours. Dry clean not recommended. Do not bleach. Iron cotton setting the reverse side as to not create a sheen on the indigo cotton.
